COLOMBIANA Movie Review
Let me just start by saying that the movie was exactly what I would have expected judging by the previews, it's action packed, there's revenge, redemption and an ensemble of memorable characters. When you have someone like producer Luc Besson who is known for his movies with lead female roles that empower strength and kick serious ass (Leon: The Professional, Joan of Arc and La Femme Nikita) you know that you are in for a ride.
The movie is based around a girl named Cateleya (Zoe Saldana) who witnessed her parents getting murdered when she was 9 years old. She then finds her way in to her uncle Tito and grandmother Abuela's arms. Now, unlike most children she decides that she wants to become a trained killer when she grows up. She then grows up and over the span of a few years she kills a couple of dozen people before the FBI is hot on her tail. The action begins and a few more murders happen. After every kill she leaves a little trademark, which is something I never understood because that usually tips people off and gets you caught in the end. Anyways, what movie would be a movie without a bit of a love story, or should I say sexy time. During the course of Cateleya's kills she finds herself in the arms of artist Danny Delanay who knows nothing about her let alone her real name. I have to stop it at that so that I don't give a way the movie.
The fighting scenes aren't forgiving or flexible for a woman however the last fighting scene was just decent at best because of it's choppiness. I'm not sure if they chose that style purposely or if it just made more sense due to the fighting style itself. Whatever the case may be you have to see it and judge for yourself. And on the topic of fight scenes I have to give my respect to the young actress/actor who was being chased down by the cartel at the beginning of the movie. If you've already seen the movie then you know exactly what I am talking about, if not remember that I mention this part because it is one of the best scenes in the entire film.
Zoe Saldana is hot, fit and kicks some serious ass in this movie. If she looks familiar it's probably because you have seen her in Star Trek or Avatar (and will again when she reprises her roles in both of those sequels). In an interview she talks about the intense training that she had to go through and how she wanted everything to be as realistic as possible. There is no question that she will have a ton of offers to play lead 'ass kicking' chick roles in the future.
I would have to say that this was one of the better movies that came out summer of 2011.
