UNEARTH - Darkness In The Light CD Review
ARTIST: Unearth
TITLE: Darkness In The Light
YEAR: 2011
LABEL: Metal Blade
REVIEWED BY: Caroline Restiaux
Unearth is back on it's game with the 5th full-length album Darkness In The Light. I have to say that this is their best release to date. So if you are already a fan of the band then you should be easily impressed with this collection of new songs. Adam D from Killswitch Engage took on the production and fellow KE band mate Justin Foley signed on to do the drum work for the guys.
I wasn't too sure what to expect from the quintet when I first put the album on and as soon as it started I was already interested. Melodic right from the beginning, these guys prove that they know how to blend melody and brutality and do so with ease. Trevor's vocals are spot on and I have to admit the boy can really sing. He's got a good clean voice which is refreshing to hear every now and then on the album. The clean vocals aren't overdone so they do blend in very nicely. For those attending Unearth's shows you will be happy to be in the pit enjoying the chuggy breakdowns that this release has to offer. For me, the best part of this album is the guitar duo Buz McGrath and Ken Susi. This is the best that I've ever heard come from them. The harmonies are awesome! Everything just seems to flow on the album. There is a huge amount of energy, this album is on steroids!
Now in all reality there is going to be the nay sayers that think this is nothing great. Although there was no mold breaking involved here it still stands out and these tracks are more memorable then any that I have heard from them before. My faves are 'Watch it Burn', 'Shadows In The Light' and 'Arise The War Cry'. It's worth the pennies you spend to get it if you enjoy a bit of metalcore melodic brutality.
