LORDS OF CHAOS Book Review
Written by Michael Moynihan & Didrik Soderlind
Whether you are a fan of the Black Metal genre or not there is something in this book that will get your attention if you like Metal in general. It has tons of interviews with the musicians who played an influential part in the rise of the Satanic Metal Underground. Along with these interviews you will learn about the Norwegian Black Metal scene and the roles that Euronymous and Varg Vikernes played in it.
When you hear of Black Metal the first things that will usually come to mind are Satan and Church Burnings. Well what kind of book speaking of its Bloody Rise would not include this information and how it all began. It recounts stories of some of the most notorious burnings and even talks a bit about Anton Lavey and his obsession with Satan. There is also information of a few Black Metal musician murders that occurred in the early 90's and who was responsible for committing them.
The book starts off by getting the reader in the know of how Black Metal first came to be. How bands like Black Sabbath, Coven and Black Widow influenced those like Venom and Bathory to peak an interest in those Norwegians to create a band such as Mayhem. It then goes on to speak of the infamous deaths associated with the scene and also speaks of the 'hang out' Cellar of Helvete'. The music made a lot of headlines and the book is full of the ones that made the biggest impacts, there's even a photo of Dead shown after blowing his brains out.
I thought it was a well written book with what seemed to be some pretty accurate information. Oddly enough I had watched "Until the light takes us" a documentary about Norwegian Black Metal not long after I had finished the book and it was almost as if they had used the book as its reference. Very similar in content from start to finish. This book is worth the read and very informative, hell it will get you blaring Mayhem, Burzum and Bathory once you put it down!
